Diet, Diet, Diet

This week I want to focus on diet. Between all of the chocolate on sale and the fact that it is still rather cold outside means that most diets are already on the rocks. It also doesn’t help that by February, most New Year’s resolutions have already fallen by the wayside. If we’re fully honest with ourselves, most of them haven’t even started yet. The truth is that temptation is everywhere when it comes to cheating on our diets. I mean, food just tastes so darn good! I know that this is my problem, at least.
The great thing is that a diet doesn’t have to feel like a diet. You don’t have to quit everything cold turkey and eat nothing but greens and egg whites for the rest of your life. In fact, there are some entire websites that are dedicated to healthy recipes that don’t taste like you expect healthy food to taste. One of the newer trends is using cauliflower as a substitute for everything ranging from mashed potatoes to chicken wings. Although I haven’t personally tried it, a friend of mine who recently started eating vegetarian said that she missed chicken wings the most. After trying a specific cauliflower recipe, she said she couldn’t even really tell the difference with the spices and sauce.
One of my personal winter pitfalls is soup. There’s nothing like a nice bowl of soup or chowder when it’s cold out. The problem with soup is that it normally doesn’t have much in the way of nutrition. Canned soup is normally very high in sodium and can have some nasty chemicals and preservatives. It is always better to make homemade soup if you can, this way you can put more vegetables in the soup and can pick and choose what you use as ingredients. Low fat cream to thicken it or all-natural meat stock may not seem to be much different, but it can mean a much healthier meal that still hits the spot.
