Take a moment right now to think about how you are sitting and reading this. Are you in a computer chair reading this from a desktop? Are you stretched out on the couch reading this on a laptop? Maybe you are reading this on your smartphone with your head bent over and your back slouched. Whatever the way you are reading this, you are probably doing damage to your body. Unfortunately, it is extremely easy to do this and we normally don't even notice it. This is the most dangerous part of the problem.
Repetitive stress disorders are often seen in people who work in an office setting, however more and more people are developing them. These are things like carpel tunnel and other problems caused by typing constantly or having your smartphone down on your lap as you look through it. Having your neck constantly bent or your back often slouched or even your wrists not positioned correctly when you are typing can have some serious repercussions later in life. These often interrupt your ability to work and even your day to day life. It can cause pain, muscle cramping, soreness, and many other things that you generally want to avoid if you can.
Now naturally we aren't going to tell you that you need to quit your job if you work at a desk or that you need to stop using your cell phone. We do, however, want you to realize that the way you sit or position yourself may be doing some damage. Look into the equipment you use as well. Many women end up with repetitive stress injuries due to the fact that most office equipment was designed for use by men, including computer mice, keyboards, and chairs. Changing one of these things can make a world of difference.
Another great thing for you to do is come into Wirth Chiropractic in, Greenville NC, for a spinal adjustment. We can help monitor your back, neck, and other joints to make sure that if you do end up with a repetitive stress injury, it is caught early. These issues are nothing to mess around with and wait on, so the sooner they are caught the better recovery you will likely have. Come in today and see what we can do for you to help make work just a little more comfortable.

I don't know about you, but I love Halloween. It's my favorite holiday. There's something about the cooling weather, the turned leaves, and the excitement in the air that just makes me happy every time it rolls around. Although I am dreading the snow and cold that I know will come soon, Halloween has always been my favorite time of year. Pumpkins are out and ghost stories can be found everywhere. Besides, you can go out and find free candy if you're younger (or have young children) and the day after Halloween, the candy that you've been craving for a month by now goes half price! Honestly, there doesn't seem to be much better than being able to dress up and pretend to be something you're not for a night, forget your responsibilities, and either get candy or give candy out to kids who you know are going to be ecstatic and sugar high for the next week at least.
While this is a wonderful time, we must also remember that not everything is great all at once. This is especially true of the candy that you either collect or are left with at the end of the night. It is always so tempting to eat as much of it as possible, but as we know that will likely make you sick. If you portion out your candy, at least, it will last longer. Now you may be asking, "Why are you telling me how to eat my candy? You fix backs." This is true, but chiropractors can also give you diet tips and help you figure out what a good and balanced meal for you would be. This means that yes, we are qualified to tell you that you shouldn't eat that fourth snickers bar, even if it is the fun size. We know there's nothing fun about less candy for anyone but your dentist, but it will help you in the long run. While Halloween may bring out your inner child, it unfortunately won't bring out your inner child's metabolism and that's where the problem may arise.
Come in to Wirth Chiropractic and see what we can do for you. We can help you with any back or neck pain, but we also may be able to help you see what damage eating too much candy can do. Don't worry though, we won't tell if you sneak a KitKat out of your kid's bag.

Although you may not think of a chiropractic office when you think about treatment after a car accident, we are certainly equipped to handle a lot of the pain management that you may need. While any car accident can be potentially deadly, it is arguably worse for people who are walking when they are struck. Their bodies take the brunt of the impact instead of another surface with safety mechanisms. These types of accidents are almost always traumatic, especially if the car was doing anything over 25 MPH. Here are a couple of things you can do as a pedestrian to make sure that you are safer when crossing streets.
1. Look Both Ways. We all learned this in school, but it does bear repeating. It is important to always look both ways before crossing a street. It doesn't matter if it is a one way street or if you have the right of way while crossing. Looking both ways is one of the best ways to help prevent accidents as you should be able to see if someone will stop or not while driving where you are meaning to cross.
2. Don't Be Distracted. We all lead busy lives, but when you are walking around traffic you should focus your full attention on that. There is already a big enough problem with people being on their phones, especially texting, while driving. If you are trying to cross anything, even a parking lot, keep the phone in your pocket or purse and don't read that text until you get to some place that is safe.
3. Know The Laws. Knowing the laws in your town and state are extremely important. While many states have laws that say that the pedestrian has the right of way in crosswalks, not all of them do. It is important to know these things not just for safety but to avoid possibly being ticketed.
Here at Wirth Chiropractic, in Greenville NC, we always want to make sure that our patients are safe and healthy. Car accidents with pedestrians are often horrific and we want to make sure that you have done everything you can to prevent yourself from being another statistic. Follow these three rules and always be careful when you are walking around traffic. You never know when someone else isn't paying attention.

Now that it is almost Halloween, there are a few things that many of us start thinking about. One of those things for me is when that bulk candy is going to go on sale. I know that I shouldn't, but I just have such a weakness for Kit-Kat bars, you know? We all have that one treat that we just can't say no to, but unfortunately those treats can turn on us. As with anything, moderation is key and these big bags of candy are not different. If you have poor self-control around Halloween, here are a couple of tips that you may want to follow to avoid any tricks.
1. Buy For Others. One thing I have found that works for me is I only buy candy that I don't like. Things like malted milk balls and caramel candies are my least favorite so that is what I buy the most of. That means that I am not really tempted to eat any of the candy as it sits their waiting for the kids that will drive their parents nuts all night on their sugar high. Sometimes I will buy a small bag of things I like, but the majority of candy is not for me. Granted this only helps if there is candy you aren't a fan of.
2. Buy Late. Although it may be a little bit more expensive, it may be in your best interest to buy the majority of your Halloween candy a day or two before so that it isn't sitting in your house and tempting you the entire time. This not only helps you to cut back on your own intake, but also makes sure that you will have enough for all of the kids that may show up. Not much is worse than running out of candy half way through the night and knowing that there are still kids out there looking for some.
Here at Wirth, we love candy as much as the next person. However, we also know that the last few months of the year are often rough for a lot of people when it comes to keeping a healthy diet. We want to do all we can to help you stay healthy through the entire year and these tips for Halloween are just the beginning.

This week I want to talk to you about outside activities. Getting outside and breathing in some fresh air is one of the best things that most people can do for their health. This is especially true if it means they get a bit of exercise while they are outside. Although the weather is getting a bit cooler there are still dozens of things that you can do outside. Here are just a few of them.
1. Apple Picking. October is widely known as the best month to pick apples. Getting outside and climbing some trees if you're able is great exercise and often takes us back to when we were young and even healthier. Besides, then you get to eat the apples you pick which is always a good thing! Add some fruit to your day by going apple picking with your friends and family.
2. Pumpkin Picking. Much like apple picking, pumpkin picking is something that most people love to do in October. The great thing about going to a pumpkin patch is that often there is apple cider or other goodies to snack on. Just make sure you do that in moderation. Many patches also have other things to do such as hay rides and corn mazes for hours of entertainment.
3. Raking Leaves. While this activity isn't quite as fun as the previous two, it is something that normally needs to be done at least once a year. The good thing about waiting until the end of the season to do this is that you can jump in the huge piles of leaves like you did as a kid! Even if you can't jump into the mound, you'll probably bring quite a bit of joy to the little ones in your family or maybe your pets if they like to be outside.
Although October means that the weather is cooling down for us, it doesn't mean you need to stay inside until spring. There are tons of things that you can do in the fall that get you out of the house and active. It is always better to be out and about when it comes to your health, so come on out to Wirth Chiropractic and get a spinal adjustment in preparation for all of that raking and pumpkin lifting you are going to do soon.

This week, I really wanted to focus on writing about the seniors in our lives. Making sure that those we love who are getting older are staying healthy is something that we really need to keep in mind. Often, those from the older generations will tend to be stubborn and not let us know when something is wrong or worry less about their health than they should. This means that you need to make sure that all of your loved ones are staying healthy, even if you think they are old enough to take care of themselves.
Something that needs to be remembered is that seniors cannot keep acting like they would when they were younger. While we fully support having a great attitude, sometimes the body just does not want to work the same as it used to. This is a horrible situation to be in, but it is a fact that many of us have to face. Keeping yourself healthy as you age is something that should be at the top of your priority list and you should encourage your older loved ones to do the same thing. Spending some time with them doing these activities is always a good idea, and will be beneficial to the both of you.
Bringing your elderly family and friends out and about is something that you should talk to them about doing. Even setting up a single day a week or a month may make a world of difference to their mental and physical health. If they can still get around on their own, then encourage them to spend some time with you if possible. It has been proven that having a buddy to work out with helps to motivate you so that you can do your best every time you are out.
Even if working out or walking around isn't something you can do, then there are other options for you and those you love. Bring your elderly family and friends into Wirth Chiropractic, in Greenville NC, and see just how much it can help their mobility and overall health. It has been proven that chiropractic care helps people with very few side effects, so there is nothing to lose. Come on in and see just how much better your senior loved ones feel after a spinal adjustment.

This week I want to talk about ways that you can try and reduce your pain levels without medication. While some of these will not work for everyone, there is nothing wrong with trying to do what you can. Pain is never fun to live with, so we wanted to give you a couple of options to try the next time you are hurting.
1. Stretch. Stretching may seem like the last thing you want to do if you are in pain, but it really does help a lot of people. If your muscles are sore, it may be because they are tight. Stretching helps to loosen your muscles and releases chemicals in your brain which will help you feel better. Try some gentle stretching the next time you start to feel a bit achy.
2. Shower or Bath. Getting in some water can really help your joints and muscles when you are having a bad day. If you don't like sinking down into a bath, or can't for medical reasons, then there is nothing wrong with getting into the shower and spending time with the water coming down onto you. If you want to spend a longer period of time in the shower, you can always try and get a chair that fits and sit there while enjoying the nice warm water as it relaxes you. Maybe try some candles or a diffuser to relax you even further through scent.
3. Nap. Although normally people will tell you to get up and work through whatever pain you are in, the truth is you may not always be able to. Only you know how you feel. If you are in too much pain to get up and move around, then don't. Take a few hours and lay down in a spot that is comfortable and maybe get a little more sleep. Hopefully you will wake up feeling a lot better.
4. Hydrate. One of the biggest problems that I personally have is not drinking enough water. Staying hydrated can help reduce the pain you feel and means that you can focus on other things that you need to do.
While these four things aren't cures to your pain, they certainly won't hurt you to try. Give them a shot and then come into Wirth Chiropractic to see just how much better we can make you feel.

A few years ago, a study was completed which found possible ties between spinal health and the vitamin D levels that are found in the human body. At the Washington University of St. Louis, a study was done involving 313 patients who were getting ready to undergo spinal fusion surgery. This is obviously not a small surgery to get, as anything in or near the spine is going to be dangerous. The thing that was most concerning to researchers is that fifty seven percent of patients had low enough levels of vitamin D to be considered deficient. The spinal fusion surgery requires the body to create new bone. Without appropriate levels of vitamin D, this may be difficult or nearly impossible to do.
When the study was presented in early 2015, there was some retaliation from the larger medical community for the results. They claimed that the 313 patients may have not been a large enough study group and that the fifty seven percent of people found to have this deficiency may have been a unique and special group. While we fully accept that this is a possibility, we also want our patients to have as much information at their disposal as possible. Many people come into chiropractic offices like Wirth because they do not want to risk surgery or medication. While we aren't saying we can prevent that from happening in one hundred percent of cases, we do want to always do our best to give you the most recent information so that you can do what you want with it.
With this new finding about vitamin D deficiency in people having to undergo a spinal fusion surgery, some doctors are calling for testing to be done in their patients that would be suggested for this procedure. Some chiropractors argue that appropriate levels of vitamin D may preempt the need for invasive surgeries, as it helps to promote healthy bone growth and many other wonderful things.
Here at Wirth Chiropractic in Greenville NC, we can't do bloodwork for you but we can certainly help you out in other ways. If you are suffering from back and neck pain but don't want to jump right to the thought of surgery, then come on in and see just how much a simple spinal adjustment can help you.
