This week I want to talk to you about stretching. During the winter, you may not want to go outside much. I can’t say that I blame you either, as I highly dislike cold weather and try to stay inside as much as possible, regardless of whether or not it means at home or at a local store. However, the shorter the amount of time I am outside, the better in my opinion. Unfortunately this means that I don’t exercise nearly as much as I should during the winter. This is why I tend to stretch a lot more during the cold months. Here are some of my favorites:
1. Touch Your Toes. This one is as straightforward as it sounds but not always as easy. Many people cannot touch their toes for any number of reasons. If you find this to be true because you simply aren’t flexible, try every day and see what improvements you can make. I find that taking a deep breath and then letting it out while you are bent over tends to help you reach just a little lower to stretch out those muscles in the backs of your legs. If you cannot stand up and bend over, try sitting on a flat surface and reaching along your legs until you can now touch your toes.
2. Leg Lifts. While I tend to have hip problems, one of the best ways that I have found to feel better is a certain rotation into a leg lift. I start with both feet on the ground, then pick up the foot of the hip that hurts. I then bend my knee so that it is in front of the other in a perpendicular fashion. I then rotate my leg so that my knee is pointing in the opposite direction and continue that motion until my leg is extended behind me parallel to the ground. This may take some practice but it certainly does help immensely.
If you are interested in learning about other stretches that you can do, come into Wirth Chiropractic and we can explore what will work best for your body. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have an adjustment while you are here, so we can have a nice, long appointment and figure out what will help you lead a pain free life!

This week, we really wanted to focus on car accidents. While it isn’t a happy subject to dwell on, it is certainly one that is close to many of us. Whether you have been severely hurt in a car crash, or someone you know and love has, we are all touched by this topic in one way or another. Even I have been. In fact, many of you probably have multiple stories of how car accidents have changed your life or the lives of those around you. I know I do.
My grandmother was partially paralyzed due to a car accident in the 1970’s. When the crash occurred, a drunk driver had drifted into her lane and caused a head on collision with her, my grandfather, and my mother all in the car. As a direct result of this she had died twice on her way to the hospital and spent many months recovering before she was released to go home. Her right arm was permanently paralyzed and so she had to relearn to do everything with her left hand. Unfortunately, this story is not one that is uncommon to many of us. Although safety features in cars have improved immensely since that time, there is still always the possibility that something hits a car just right or a safety feature fails and someone ends up severely injured or killed.
While we here at Wirth hope that none of you can relate to this story, we also know that it is foolish of us to believe that to be true. Many of us have lost loved ones to car accidents or have had those we know and care for permanently injured. Whether it was done through someone else’s negligence or due to something beyond anyone’s control, the fact of the matter is that car accidents change people’s lives.
If you or a loved one has been in a car accident and still experiences pain due to this event, we want to see you. We have treated people who have been in accidents for years and know that there is a high probability that we can help you as well. If you are still in pain, we want to change that. No one should have to live with pain for any reason. Come on into Wirth Chiropractic and see what we can do to help you.

This week I really wanted to focus on what you can do to make your winter healthier. I know that personally, the winter is my least healthy season. I eat poorly, my mental health suffers, and I’m normally in a lot more pain during these months than the rest of the year. Thankfully I have figured out some ways to help these issues and want to share them with you as well. After all, I know I’m not the only one who doesn’t like winter for these reasons so why not share what I’ve found to make it a little easier?
The first thing that I want to remind you is that you don’t have to eat unhealthy food during the winter. Having vegetables is still something that you can do, especially in something as warm and comforting as soup. Just be careful when it comes to soups that you buy in a can at the store, as they can contain a lot of salt, which isn’t good. Try making your own and then you can experiment with exactly what you want in it.
The point of winter is to try and stay active during it no matter how much you just want to curl up under a blanket and hibernate. Even things like shoveling the snow away can be helpful, but be careful not to overexert yourself. After all, shoveling can be dangerous to your joints, so make sure you don’t carry too much snow at once or look into those curved shovels so that you don’t have to bend down as much.
Thinking spring can really help you stick out the last few weeks of winter. Even preparing for some spring cleaning may be helpful if you feel like you’re trapped in your house for whatever reason. I like to go through my things and get rid of stuff I haven’t used in a while, but you might want to actually start cleaning a little early. It’s really up to you, and that’s the great thing about it!
If you are still having trouble, come into Wirth Chiropractic in Greenvile, NC and see what an adjustment and perhaps some diet and exercise plans can do for you. You never know how much it can change your life until you try it!

Car accidents are an incredible scary thing to deal with. Unfortunately, it is predicted that the average driver will be in around three or four accidents over the course of their life. If you have ever been in an accident you will know how stressful they can be, and that is even before the insurance companies get involved. Hopefully you will be able to walk away unharmed, but often people are not quite so lucky.
Over 37,000 people die in the United States each year in car accidents. This number, naturally, is higher globally. An average of 3,287 people are killed around the world in car accidents each day. This equates to around 1.3 million fatalities each year. This means that 2.2 percent of all deaths around the world each year are a result of a car accident. In fact, it is predicted that if nothing is done to change these patterns, car accidents will be the fifth leading cause of death around the world by the year 2030. This is only in another thirteen years. It is currently the leading cause of death in healthy Americans traveling abroad.
The truly sad reality is how many young people are killed each year by car accidents. Nearly 8,000 people are killed in America that are between the ages of sixteen and twenty every year. Over 1,600 children under the age of fifteen are killed in addition to this previous number. Globally, crashes are the leading cause of death for those between fifteen and twenty nine and the second leading cause of death for those between five and fourteen. As if this weren’t bad enough, we haven’t even touched upon those who are injured and not killed annually. Worldwide, this number is between twenty and fifty million.
Although against these statistics it may seem that those who survive car accidents are lucky, those who are severely injured normally don’t feel terribly lucky. The pain and suffering that can be felt from a car crash is often something that lasts quite a long time. While we cannot help everything regarding crashes, we may be able to help relieve some of your pain. Spinal adjustments have been shown to help relieve pressure that can be a direct result of the impact from an accident. Come into Wirth Chiropractic today and see how much better you feel after an adjustment.

Having a long winter is one of the worst things that can happen which humans have no control over in my opinion. I absolutely love winter if I’m looking at it in a picture, but anything else is physically painful. Right now, I have two feet of snow outside my door and it is still falling. Let me tell you, my joints have been screaming for the past three days and today I hardly want to move. For this reason, I’ve come up with a few ideas that can help you get through these long winters if you feel like I do about them.
First, having something warm to drink is essential. I personally prefer hot chocolate at this time of the year, but coffee or apple cider is perfectly fine. Sometimes I like to experiment with my hot chocolate and figure out what tastes really well in it, so sometimes I’ll melt a candy cane or put some adult beverage in it as well. It really does help to relax you, so give it a try on one of these really cold nights.
Another thing that I always do is take a nice, warm shower or bath. Being able to relax in the warmth is wonderful and can really help to ease those aches and pains that you get from the weather outside. If I don’t have access to warm water or electricity by extension, I have found that having hand warmers placed on the particularly painful areas can really help relax the muscles, so you might want to give that a try too.
If you still have electricity, then having some calming music or a gentle movie on can really help as well. I can get a little stir crazy, so having something that relaxes me even when I’m just sitting on the couch is really beneficial. It’s certainly better than having to watch out the window as the snow piles up to a ridiculous height.
Finally, it normally helps to remember that even though the winter may feel long, it won’t last forever. After all, it is already March right now and hopefully this will be the last substantial snowfall that we will see this year. Just remember when you’re wishing for winter in a few months that it could always be worse.

When it is cold outside, we tend to look for comfort food. Things that are loaded with carbs and other unhealthy things are often the order of the day. My personal downfall is macaroni and cheese, but all kinds of pasta really take a close second. Even though I know it isn’t good for me to eat too much of it, I tend to find myself chowing down like crazy during the winter and then wondering why I’m starting to look like a polar bear. Here are some ideas of healthier foods that you can make during the winter months.
One of my childhood staples during the winter was always kale soup. My mother would take a 20 gallon pot, which I always remember being almost as big as me at that age, and boiling kale, carrots, potatoes, and whatever other vegetables she could find with some onions and garlic and that seemed to be almost all we ate throughout the entire winter. There are dozens of different recipes that you can find online until you see the one you like the most.
Another thing that I have recently noticed is how popular cauliflower has become for vegetarian and vegan alternatives to meat. My cousin is a vegetarian and brought a great dish over during the holidays that was one of the yummiest things. She stuffed a whole head of cauliflower with kale and chestnuts (although you can likely use whatever you like best) and then roasted the entire thing until it was a yellowish brown. Cutting into it smelled divine and the whole thing was gone before the end of the night!
My personal favorite dish for the winter that can be passed as healthy is a basic chicken and rice. I like to marinate my chicken in some bourbon teriyaki sauce along with some garlic and whatever else sounds good that day and serve it over some plain white rice. It’s a super easy dish that can be dressed up easily with just a few changes, but it always seems to fill you and hit the spot.
If you are wondering about other healthy foods that you can make during the winter to warm you up, then come into Wirth Chiropractic in Greenville NC and we can draw up a diet plan for you. You never know what you might find that you like!

Sometimes we can do something wrong even if we had the best of intentions. While this is true in basically any subject in life, here at Wirth Chiropractics we really only deal with the physical aspects of things. In this current correspondence, I want to talk about hurting yourself while trying to be healthy. If you’ve ever gone running or headed to the gym to work on your upper body strength only to find that you have a sore back afterwards, you know exactly what I mean. You are trying to keep your body in good shape and form and all of a sudden you feel betrayed. You’re trying to help your body and this is how it repays you? Well luckily there are some things that you can do.
When you have a hurt back, you don’t want to do anything. Sometimes that is exactly what the doctor ordered, so to speak. At times, depending on the injury, you may just need a day or two to recuperate. Lying in bed and watching television may be just what you need to do. Just make sure that a habit of this doesn’t develop, otherwise you will be right back where you started before you were exercising.
Another thing that you may want to do is take a nice warm shower or bath. This can help to loosen up your muscles in your back that may have tightened in order to protect the injury. Stay in there for a while with the hot water hitting the affected area and see if this helps. If water isn’t an option, or if you are just tired of taking showers, you can try a heating pad or rice filled sock to simulate this feeling. You may even want a heated massager, but be careful with those as they can sometimes further damage an injury.
If you ask me, your best option to recover from a back injury that you sustained during exercise is to come into Wirth Chiropractic for a spinal adjustment. A simple manipulation of your back can have you feeling like new in no time. You may even get rid of pain that you didn’t notice you were carrying with you. Come on in today and see what we can do for you. You might be amazed at how much of a difference it makes for you!

Now that it’s past New Year’s, it may seem a little less exciting trying to stick to those resolutions. It really is difficult to try and change your bad habits into good ones, especially if you have been following those bad ones for years. Here are a few tips for you to remember about keeping to your resolutions.
1. Don’t Get Discouraged. Everyone falters and cheats a little when working on their resolutions. The main thing for you to remember is not to get discouraged and give up. Realize what you did, why you shouldn’t have done it, and move past it. While this may be difficult, remember why you are doing this. You want to better yourself in some way, so be ready to hit a few bumps on that path.
2. Set Small Goals. If you are trying to lose weight, which is the most common resolution, set goals for yourself. The one thing to remember is to make sure they’re reasonable. You may want to lose sixty pounds and that’s great! You need to remember, though, that it won’t all come off at once. It may take much longer than you wanted. If you write on the calendar what weight you want to be by what date, you can get very discouraged when you hit a plateau or don’t reach that goal by that time. Everyone hits these goals differently. Don’t give up just because your body doesn’t want to be put on a strict schedule.
3. Stay Healthy. Depending on what your resolution is, you may be tempted to go about reaching this goal in a way that isn’t good for you. This is most commonly seen in weight loss goals as well. We want you to remember to stick to a healthy method of achieving your goal, even if it takes longer than you wanted it to. If you are worried about how you have been trying to reach your resolution, then please speak to a doctor about it to double check. Your health is the most important thing and you don’t want to reach your goal without being able to fully enjoy it.
This first month is often the hardest when it comes to regressing into your old ways. Stick with it and before you know it, you’ll be exactly where you wanted to be. Wirth Chiropractic believes in you!
