The Importance of Stretching - Greenville Chiropractor

This week I want to talk to you about stretching. In the summer you may not want to do a full workout some days due to the heat, but as fall rolls around it becomes easier. While it might not be fun, small things like simple stretches can make all the difference in the world. Just keeping your body nice and loose for the next day you feel up to working out can mean the difference between pulled muscles and a productive session. Here are some great stretches that don’t take much effort for you to try.

Touch Your Toes. Touching your toes may sound too simple, but it really is a good thing to try and do every day. It’s also helpful if you try it from different angles and positions. Before you get out of bed in the morning, see how far down your leg you can reach while sitting. Once you get up, bend over and try touching your toes while standing on the ground. You may be surprised at how much of a difference there is between the distances depending on how you’re positioned.

Standing Side Stretch. This stretch is fairly self-explanatory, but it is extremely helpful. While standing straight up, lift your arms over your head and interlace your fingers while pointing up towards the sky. Take a deep breath and slowly bend towards your right. Hold that for a minimum of five seconds before bringing your body back up to center and then repeating the stretch to your left.

The Butterfly. This one will likely remind you of gym class. While sitting down on the floor, bring the bottoms of your feet together with your knees out to the sides. Bring your feet in as close to your body as you can and then lean forward. This will help to stretch out your thighs and your back, so make sure to breathe through it even though your stomach may feel restricted.

When you are too busy to do a full workout, stretching can be a great option. It isn’t always the best day for you to go for a run or sometimes you’re just running a bit too late, so it’s good to have something that you can fall back on. Just make sure you get back to your normal exercise as soon as you can!

Drunk Driving - Greenville Chiropractor

I think we can all agree that drinking and driving is one of the worst choices you can make in your life. Although the days that you see the most drinking in this country are New Years and around the 4th of July, drunk drivers can be on the road at any time of the year. It is important that you always stay alert while behind the wheel, but there are times where you have to be more careful than others. These times include the days mentioned above, any local celebrations, and even certain times of the night, which generally depend on when the bars in your area close for the evening.

While we have all been taught about the dangers of drinking and driving at this point, there are unfortunately some people who still decide to do it anyway. Drinking alcohol not only impacts your ability to make safe decisions, but it also slows down your reaction time drastically. These are only a couple of the reasons why driving with any amount of alcohol in your system is extremely dangerous. Be sure to check what the legal limit in your state is and how many drinks that generally equates to. You should always stop drinking a few hours before you need to drive, and make sure that you're eating and drinking water over the course of the time you're drinking as well. We do suggest that if possible, you have a designated driver or stay the night wherever you are celebrating.

Every year, we hear about hundreds of people who are seriously injured or killed because someone decided to drink and drive. While we can and do help people that are living with severe pain after a car accident here, we never like to hear that a drunk driver was the reason for the injury. The worst part is that we know that those who are able to come in of their own volition are the luckier ones. If you need to drive, we suggest you skip the alcohol and get home safe instead.

We want all of our patients to have fun, but we also want everyone to stay safe. It is important that you remember to come into Wirth Chiropractic if you have any pain, especially if it is the result of a car accident. Being hit by a drunk driver is scary, but you don't have to go through it alone when you have us on your side!

But It's Only at Stop Lights - Greenville Chiropractor

When you stop at a traffic light, there isn't much to do except wait for your turn. Sometimes that can seem like a eternity. If you're at an intersection that has a delayed green or even just a naturally long cycle, you may start to get bored. After all, there's only so much looking around that you can realistically do before you've seen it all. Sometimes you get lucky and there's something entertaining to watch going on around you, but most of the time you just need to sit there and wait. It's no surprise that these are the moments that many people use to check their cell phones.

It seems like a harmless thing. The light's red, you know it's going to stay that way for a few seconds at least, so you check to make sure that nothing major has happened while you've been driving. Perhaps you were having a conversation with a friend or your spouse that you don't want to leave a long break in. Maybe you're checking to make sure your parents are doing fine while watching your child. Whatever the reason, checking your phone is safe at the moment, right? You're not moving or anything, so it doesn't seem to really be an issue. Unfortunately, this just isn't the case.

While it may seem safe to check your phone if you're stopped at a light, it really isn't. This is due to one main thing: your attention is now split. You need to make sure that you are constantly aware of your surroundings when behind the wheel, and you simply can't do that if you're paying attention to your phone. Not only do you need to watch for the light to turn green again, but making sure that other drivers on the road are doing what they should be so you don't get hurt is an important part of driving too. The only good time to check your phone while you're in your car is if you're parked in a safe area away from other moving vehicles.

Here at Wirth Chiropractic, we know how dangerous it can be to be behind the wheel while someone else is driving while checking their phone. If you were in a crash caused by someone looking at their phone at a stop light, give us a call. We can help you feel better in no time!

Does the Radio Help or Hurt? - Greenville Chiropractor

There's nothing quite like getting ready for a highly anticipated road trip. You get your snack foods for the drive, you get your cooler full of drinks, and you make sure your luggage is all ready and packed before you set out. You get into your car full of excitement, but then you realize there's a problem: your music player didn't charge correctly. This means that you need to listen to the radio while you plug it in and wait for it to charge enough so that it can connect to your car's stereo system. This isn't always a terrible thing, but you quickly remember why you aren't a fan of the radio. You know what kind of music you enjoy and it isn't the same 30 songs over and over with ten minutes of commercials in between every three or four songs. This results in you trying to scan through the radio stations every few minutes. This normally isn't too much of a problem, but it does require you to take your eyes off the road every time you want to find the seek button. That's where the real danger in all this is.

Any time you take your eyes off the road, even for a second, it is dangerous. It's important to remember that you are not the only person driving on the road and you can never assume that everyone else is driving responsibly. With more and more drivers driving distractedly, it's safer to drive with extreme caution. Keeping your eye on the other cars is a must, but that means that you cannot drive while distracted. If you are trying to change the radio frequently, you may miss something like road work ahead, which can quickly cause a crash. While music may be an important part of your drive, it is never more important that getting to your destination safely.

Driving with the radio on can be fine, but if it's going to be more of a distraction than a benefit, it's better to drive in silence. You should always do your best to bring along something that will help make your trip easier, even if that means your old music player so you can have it playing in the backseat. Anything that takes your attention away from the road is more of a liability than it helps. You never know, you may actually enjoy having time to think for a change!

What You Need to Know About Neck and Back Pain - Greenville Chiropractor

While we are all aware on some level that our necks and backs are important to every movement we make, we don’t realize just how much it can impact your day if either of those body parts aren't working the way they always used to. It isn’t until you have to deal with a stiff back or severe neck pain in that you really start to understand just how much you use these muscles throughout the day.

As you start to get older, you may realize that you seem to hurt yourself more and more while doing simple things while going about your day. Even getting into and out of bed or the shower can make you pull a muscle that puts you out of commission for the day. While it may be fun to lightly rib your friends if this happens to them, it is never truly funny when you're the one in pain. It is also never funny when it is caused by something sudden like a car accident. It can cause severe problems when you try to do simple things like driving if you are unable to turn your head or body to look both ways before making a turn. This is when these types of injuries cross from being frustrating to being actively dangerous.

There are few things in life that are worse than being hurt, but when the pain is something that happens every day, it is an issue that needs to be resolved immediately. Keeping Safe While Driving at Sunset - Greenville Chiropractor

When it comes to driving, there are an infinite number of things that can alter your standard trip. Even something as small as the position of the sun in relation to your car can really mess with your trip by impacting your vision. If you've ever had to drive directly into the sun, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The sun being out normally isn't a bad thing when you're driving, but if you drive during sunset it can definitely cause an issue. This is another reason that things like rush hour are so bad in some areas. On top of there already being more cars than usual on the road, you have to deal with the sun making it nearly impossible to see anything as you try to get home.

Sunsets are beautiful. This isn't something that very many people will argue. The incredible colors that can paint the sky are immaculate, and you never truly see the same sunset twice. While some may be more lackluster than others, any sunset where you can actively see the sun is probably going to be stunning. While this may be distracting, it is important to remember that there are bigger things to think about if you're behind the wheel during this time of the day. You can always wait to appreciate either this sunset or another until you're home safe and sound.

If you know that you're going to be driving in an area that has a bad stretch of road when it comes to the sun, there are a few things that you can do. Making sure that you have sunglasses in the car can help, but those and the visors in your car can only do so much. Trying to plan your trip to avoid the times that the sun will be at your eye level may be beneficial, even if it seems excessive at the time. We can guarantee that you will prefer that to being blinded while you're actually driving.

If you were in an accident that was caused by the sun shining in your eyes, give Wirth Chiropractic a call. While we can't stop the sun from causing you more trouble in the future, we can help to stop any pain the accident you were in caused. We know how frustrating it can be to be in an accident that you couldn't see, let alone prevent, so give us a call and see how we can help you today!

How Physical Trauma Impacts Your Life - Greenville Chiropractor

We frequently talk about car accidents, but there are dozens of other events that can cause serious damage to your body. Sometimes, it's even something that's considered safe which you had planned to do. Here at Wirth we never want to seem like we are scaring you away from anything, we just want you to be able to make the most informed decisions about your health and your future. This means that even things like standard medical procedures need to be approached from multiple angles in order for you to make the best decision about your health.

There are many different things that can be considered physically traumatic even if they aren’t strictly sudden or surprising. Two of the most common examples of these situations are surgeries and childbirth. These things are often planned ahead of time, or at least expected to happen around a general date. It may seem odd to call these experiences traumatic, but if you think about the literal definition as opposed to the connotation we generally use this word in, it is true. Traumatic is defined as something that is disturbing or distressing, and if you have seen the immediate results of either of these experiences, then you know they are definitely distressing and disturbing to the body even under the best of circumstances. Whenever something is physically distressing, you will likely have pain that follows. While chiropractic care may not be able to stop the direct pain depending on the cause, we can certainly help with any joint pain that you may experience as a result of your physically traumatic experience.

Chiropractic care is a non-invasive and prescription drug-free way of dealing with pain and other related problems that you may be experiencing. While we know that things like surgery and medication have their place in the medical world, we prefer to help people without them. It is important to remember that your body goes through a lot, so you should be gentle with it and help to keep it in good working order. Coming into Wirth for chiropractic care to help with the pain that you have been experiencing due to your physically traumatic event is just one of the things you can do. Come in and see how much better you feel after an appointment here!

The summer is drawing to a close, but one thing that definitely isn’t slowing down are the rain storms. Over the next few weeks, my local forecast has only four days where there isn’t at least a 20% chance of rain. As we start the transition into fall, it isn’t surprising to see this kind of weather as we look ahead. This is especially true when we consider all of the tropical storms and possible hurricanes that are brewing. While this is fine if you are inside and can curl up with a warm drink and a relaxing pastime, it can be a bit nerve wracking if you have to drive through it.
Driving in the rain is never an enjoyable experience. Even if everything goes fine, it can be frustrating to deal with the limited visibility and the other drivers on the road. It always seems like people either drive too fast for the conditions or drive far too slow when the conditions are less than ideal. Getting a good commute in the rain can seem like an impossibility and it isn’t uncommon to see an increase in the number of crashes when the weather is poor. There are a few things that you can do to help reduce your risk, however.
Having your headlights on is a simple way to make sure that other drivers can see that you are there. Most states have a law which requires you to have your headlights on if your windshield wipers are on, but even without the legal requirement it is a good idea to keep them on in the rain. Also, reducing your speed and using your turn signals can go a long way in regards to keeping yourself safe when conditions are less than ideal on the road.
If you were injured in a car accident that occurred due to the poor weather conditions outside, call Wirth Chiropractic today. We can help you with any pain you may still have and even with old injuries that may have already healed.
