This week I want to talk to you about being outside. Given that the weather is warming up now, it is natural for us to want to spend more time outdoors. This is perfectly fine, but you do need to realize how to protect yourself from some of the more dangerous factors in nature. Now don’t get us wrong, fresh air and some sunshine can do wonders for your mental any physical health. However, you need to remember that not everything outside is good for you. Here are some things to remember if you’re going to be spending time in nature.
1. Sunscreen. One of the most dangerous things outside is the sun. Prolonged exposure can not only cause sunburn and pain in the short term, but it may end up resulting in skin cancer later down the road. This is extremely common for people who don’t wear sunscreen and have had sun poisoning in their past. It doesn’t matter if it’s a partly cloudy day either, if you’re going to be out for a long time remember to put on some sunscreen. Also, be sure to reapply as needed, especially if you are swimming or sweating.
2. Bug Spray. If you are outside for any reason, you may want to consider wearing bug spray. While a few mosquito bites may be inconvenient to some, it can be serious in certain cases. Between the diseases that mosquitos can carry and the allergy that some people have to those bites, it is important to remember the bug spray. If you are going into the woods or tall grass, it is even more important to prevent tick bites. Ticks are starting to carry more dangerous diseases as well, so be sure to coat yourself and your shoes in DEET to prevent these issues. A little bit of a bad smell is far better to deal with than the pain that Lyme’s Disease can bring.
Being outside in the summer is great, but it is important to remember to take care of yourself as well. As long as you are responsible, you should be fine while out in the sun or lounging in the grass. After a long day of enjoying the weather, come into Wirth Chiropractic and get an adjustment. You might be amazed at how much better you feel!

This week I want to talk about some of the misconceptions that we hear about the world of chiropractic care. We get a lot of questions that deal with what we do and what our training was like, so here are some of the most common ones that occur often. It is important for any doctor to be open with their patients and it is something we always strive to do.
1. Are Chiropractors Actual Doctors? Yes, chiropractors are licensed doctors. Many people think that chiropractors don’t have medical training, but that isn’t true. In fact, chiropractors go to medical school just like any other practicing doctor and then go through additional training and schooling to specialize in chiropractic care.
2. Isn’t Chiropractic Care Just Cracking Joints? Not technically, no. While chiropractic care does have a focus in aligning your joints, it isn’t “just cracking joints”. In fact, cracking any joints yourself can be rather dangerous. While almost everyone cracks their fingers and toes and is normally okay, other joints such as those in your neck and back are much most sensitive if something goes wrong. It is important to always visit a chiropractor if you feel like something in those delicate areas need to pop.
3. Isn’t It Just Quack Medicine? Definitely not. Chiropractic care is a non-invasive and drug free way of treating pain and related disorders. While it won’t solve every issue that a person may have, it has been shown over centuries to help millions of people who couldn’t find relief any other way. Just because it doesn’t use many of the more conventional (and expensive) methods of treatment doesn’t mean it isn’t safe and effective.
4. Do You Only Crack Necks And Backs? No, we can help align basically anything in your body. While back and neck alignments are what chiropractors are best known for, they can do anything that other doctors can do. They also tend to treat injuries like those from car accidents, sports, and other traumas in all parts of the body, including legs, arms, hands, and feet.
While there are dozens more questions that we could give you answers to, these are four of the most common. If you have additional questions, feel free to come in and ask them so that we can help put your concerns to bed. After all, you never know how much better you’ll feel until you are treated here at Wirth!

This week I want to talk to you about diet. It can be hard to keep a diet through the winter, but it can be even tougher to switch back to one if you failed it during the colder months. If you decided that a diet was not for you when it was snowing outside, then I really can’t blame you but I also know how difficult it can make the summer. Here are a few ways that you can easily slip back into a diet with minimal heartache.
1. Wean Yourself Off. Some foods are just downright addictive. If you have ever tried to take something like cheese away from a group of people, there will probably be at least one who looks like you just told them they can’t have a puppy. If you have a food like that, then try treating it like you would another addiction and slowly reduce the amount that you eat until you don’t have any on a regular basis anymore. This will make it less likely for you to crave a cheat meal with it than if you quit cold turkey.
2. Have A Group. If you have a few friends that want to diet as well, try and keep in close contact with them. You don’t even have to be on the same diet, but having the emotional support of a friend group to help keep you in check can do wonders for your willpower. It also helps to give you some purpose if you are holding someone else accountable for what they eat.
3. Keep A Journal. Although it may be tedious, keeping a journal of what you eat can really help you realize just how much you put into your body. This is especially true if you don’t eat the traditional “three meals a day” and either have one or two big meals or if you snack consistently during the day. Seeing how much and when you eat can help you identify what you need to change and make it easier to do so.
If you are unsure what kind of dieting you should do, come into Wirth Chiropractic. We can help you find what kinds of foods you should stay away from and which ones you should have more of. Hopefully we can have you at your target weight and health in no time!

This week, I wanted to talk about ways that you can beat the creaking and groaning joints that you may have during these summer storms. It’s been raining for the better part of a week and a half where I live now, and I certainly woke up a bit worse for wear today. I have been cracking my knuckles like crazy and my joints are still feeling stiff even into the evening. If you have this problem as well, I want to give you some of the tips that I use to feel better.
1. Warm Bath/Shower. One of the most common treatments for aching or stiff joints is a warm shower. The heat can help to relax your muscles and loosen up your joints. Another method that you can use is a warm bath with Epsom Salts. They have been used for decades to help soothe the pain felt from arthritis and there’s a reason they are still relatively popular. After all, if the method isn’t broke there’s no need to fix it!
2. Stretching. Although you probably won’t want to do this, it really does help an incredible amount. It may hurt a bit to begin with, but stretching can help to reduce the tension in your muscles and joints by increasing blood flow to the areas you’re focusing on. It might hurt for a little bit, but the results are always great. I normally start with something simple, like touching my toes and then reaching up towards the ceiling. Depending on how much I’m hurting I might stop there or continue on to more complex stretches. Either way, it is part of my daily routine.
3. Pain Relievers. Part of living with pain like this is knowing when to take some medication. Something like Tylenol or Aleve is perfectly fine and sometimes extremely necessary. There’s nothing wrong with taking them, just make sure that you follow the recommended dosage and don’t go over that.
I hope that you are feeling just fine as you read this, but these summer storms can play havoc with some people’s joints. Just remember that there is no shame in sitting down and waiting until the pain subsides to do something. Try coming into Wirth Chiropractic and see if an adjustment helps. We can tell you that almost everyone feels better after chiropractic treatment, so there’s no reason not to at least try!

This week I wanted to talk to you about stress. Stress is a huge problem in our society and it doesn’t show any signs of getting better. There is no one thing that causes stress, either. Often, it comes from more sources than we can name. Work, family, the news, all of these things are sources of stress for millions of people around the world. Thankfully, there are a few things that we can do to mitigate the stress. Here are some of them.
1. Get A Pet. Animals have been shown time and time again to help people reduce their stress. In fact, studies have shown that owning a cat may reduce the risk of stroke by a third and that the risk of cardiovascular disease also goes down when a pet is involved. Even if you are allergic to animals, the act of petting something soft can help to reduce stress. This can be anything from a piece of fake fur to a stuffed animal. Try a few different things out and see what works best for you.
2. Meditation and Yoga. Both of these things work wonders for many people who find themselves stressed out often. The breathing techniques that are taught can help reduce stress levels by allowing the correct amount of oxygen back into the system. The best thing about meditation is that anyone can do it regardless of any physical disabilities! It may take a little while for you to find what meditation techniques work the best for you, but you’re bound to find something sooner or later.
3. Have A Hobby. Sometimes, the best thing to do when you are stressed is to throw yourself into something else entirely. Some people play video games. Some people sew or bake. Others play music or write to get away from whatever causes them distress. Whatever it is that you like doing, stick with it when you’re feeling overwhelmed and you may be amazed at how much better you feel after a little while.
Handling stress isn’t an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. Some people may not have much time to try and deal with it and other may not know how. Whatever your experience with stress is, always be sure to try and remember to breathe. There are few things that you can’t get through if you try.

This week I want to talk to you about small things that you can do to lead a healthier life. These are all actions that won’t take much time but can make a great deal of a difference in your life. They may not seem like much, but it never hurts to try and do a few more things to make yourself feel better.
1. Stretch. One of the best things that you can do is stretch. Even if all you do is reach towards your toes in the morning when you wake up and then stand up and reach for the ceiling, you may be amazed at the difference it can make over time. Although you don’t need to be super flexible to get through life, it can certainly help in some situations. Stretching also helps build certain muscles and assists with your balance. Look up some stretches that you can do at work as well and see how much better you feel.
2. De-Stress. Stress is one of the worst things that we can deal with as humans. This isn’t just because it makes us uncomfortable, but because stress can literally kill. Having a heart attack because of stress is not unheard of in any way and it doesn’t have to be that severe a reaction to be concerning. Stress can manifest in physical pain, it can reduce your immune system, and it can make you irritable which means no one will want to spend much time with you. Try and find a healthy coping mechanism like yoga or meditation to deal with your stress.
3. Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol. This one is difficult for most adults. Caffeine may seem like a necessity to many people, but you do need to remember that it is an addictive drug and should be taken in moderation. It is also worth mentioning that many drinks that have caffeine have gross amounts of sugar as well. This is also true of alcohol, on top of alcohol being a big source of weight gain among many people.
Staying healthy is difficult, but there are dozens of little things that you can do in your daily life to help yourself along the way. These are only three, but it is a good place to start. Keep adding to the list and see how much better you feel!

This week, I really wanted to focus on your general health. Things like diet and exercise can sound like concepts that don’t have much to do with health after a while since we hear the words so often, but it is important to remember that they are actually the cornerstones to staying healthy and having a productive life. There are few things that you can do to stay healthy that don’t involve diet and exercise, actually. This is why it is important to talk with your doctors and work out a plan that is right for you.
Having a healthy diet is so incredibly important to your everyday life, but it is especially important to your future. You need to make sure that you take care of yourself now so that you can avoid things like plaque buildup in your arteries and obesity which can put a lot of strain on your joints. This is even more important if you are not physically able to exercise. Having a healthy diet may not sound fun, but there are some incredible recipes that you can find online that are much better for you than it may look or even taste!
Exercise is just as important as diet in regards to your health. If you are able, it is imperative that you stay active. The phrase “if you snooze, you lose” not only applies to seats and the like, but muscles as well. If you do not remain active, your muscles will not stay toned and this can be dangerous if it goes too far. It is also much easier to stay active if you are currently active, which is something that is important as you get older. You don’t want to be someone who is scared to move when they age because they no longer have any muscle mass to hold them up or any sense of balance.
These things are so important to focus on, but they are also difficult to try and do alone. Thankfully, you can come into Wirth Chiropractic and we can help build a diet and exercise plan that is perfect for you. You never know how much better you’ll feel when you live a healthy life, but we promise that it’s better than you think. Come in today and see how we can help you for a better tomorrow!
